The SL vs AFG 2nd ODI will be played in Hambantota, Sri Lanka on Sunday, June 4. The match starts from 10 am IST. This is a must-win match for Sri Lanka to keep the series alive after losing the first ODI.

Afghanistan shocked Sri Lanka by earning a six-wicket win in the first ODI on Friday. The Lankans scored 268 batting first powered by Charith Salanka’s 91. There were contributions from Pathum Nissanka (38) and Dhananjaya de Silva (51). Afghanistan used six bowlers all of who got wickets to bowl out their opposition. Fazalhaq Farooqi and Fareed Ahmed took two each.

Afghanistan in response chased down the target in the 47th over. Ibrahim Zadran scored a run-a-ball 98. He fell just two short of his fourth ODI ton. Rahmat Shah (55), skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi (38) and former skipper Mohammad Nabi (27) played key roles in Afghanistan’s win. This was just the third win for the Afghan side against Sri Lanka in 8 ODIs.

Both countries have played a few matches against each other in recent times which have been close affairs. Afghanistan last played an ODI series against Sri Lanka incidentally in November 2022. The series ended 1-1 with Afghanistan winning the first ODI by 60 runs and The Islanders squaring the series in the third ODI winning by four wickets. The second ODI was washed out due to rain. They also played against each other in the Asia Cup 2022 and the T20 World Cup.

Heading into this series, Sri Lanka are placed below Afghanistan in the ICC ODI rankings. The Afghan team is placed eighth while Sri Lanka is placed ninth. Sri Lanka lost an ODI series against New Zealand 2-0 heading into this ODI series.

Sri Lanka have announced a 16-member squad with all their IPL players selected for the series. The team will be led by Dasun Shanaka with the likes of Maheesh Theekshana, Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana all part of the squad. Dushmantha Chameera also makes a comeback after a long injury layoff.

Talking about Afghanistan, the side will be led by Hashmatullah Shahidi with all of their IPL superstars back in the national side as well. Noor Ahmad, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Fazalhaq Farooqi are all part of the squad. Mujeeb ur Rahman is also in the squad completing the spin trio. Rashid Khan is out of the first two games with a lower back injury. He is expected to return for the final ODI on June 7.
