IND vs WI: What Is The Incentive For A Young Player To Take Pride In Playing For His State Anymore? Abhinav Mukund Express His Concerned Over Selections For West Indies Tour

Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund expressed his displeasure over selections in the Indian team for the West Indies tour. He believes that there’s no fun for a young player in playing for a state team as the Indian Premier League (IPL) seems a faster route to get entry into the national team. 

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday (23rd June) announced the squads for the ODIs and the Tests for the upcoming West Indies tour.  The transition phase in the longest format of the game began as youngsters were thrown with opportunities.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Umesh Yadav were dropped from the team following the poor show in the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia and in their place, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mukesh Kumar were presented with the call-ups.

Quite a few red flags emerged after the teams for both formats were announced. Questions were raised over the selection of Ruturaj Gaikwad in the team over Sarfaraz Khan and Abhimanyu Easwaran, who have been fantastic in the domestic circuit.

Ruturaj Gaikwad comparatively has less average and runs than Sarfaraz Khan and Abhimanyu Easwaran but he was impressive in the IPL 2023 and was rewarded with the Test cap. Sarfaraz on the other hand didn’t look good in the league but having an average of around 80 in the FC cricket wasn’t selected in the team along with Easwaran, who averages around 47. 

Many fans and pundits criticised BCCI for selecting players based on the IPL and the latest to join the bandwagon is Abhinav Mukund. Taking to his Twitter account, he was bold to highlight the poor selection process and said that there’s no incentive for young players to play for their state. 

“Unable to understand these selections- too many thoughts in my head to compile into a tweet. But what is the incentive for a young player to take pride in playing for his state anymore? Clearly the franchise route is a faster way to scale the grade.” Abhinav Mukund tweeted.

IND vs WI: Indian Test and ODI squad for the West Indies series 

India is all set to kick start the World Test Championship Cycle 2023-25 with the Test series against West Indies. The two games will begin from. 12th July to 24th July followed by ODIs that are slated to be played from 27th July to August 1st. 

On Friday (23rd June), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the Test series. Rohit Sharma will continue leading the team whereas apart from Cheteshwar Pujara, Umesh Yadav too had been dropped. Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mukesh Kumar are the new faces in the team.
