ICC World Cup 2023: Pakistans Participation In World Cup 2023 Depends On Government Clearance Najam Sethi

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi opened up about Pakistan’s participation in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. He said that both the cricketing boards don’t have a say in this as it depends on government clearance if they will go to India or not.
The ICC World Cup 2023 is around the corner as the mega event is slated to take place in India during the month of October and November. The preparations are in full flow as BCCI is renovating venues ahead of the tournament and the official schedule of the tournament will be out in the coming days.

However, the big question remains about the participation of Pakistan in the tournament. There have been a lot of issues of late between the two cricketing boards of the countries over the Asia Cup 2023 and Cricket World Cup.

While the issues over the Asia Cup have been sorted with the hybrid model, there is still no confirmation about Pakistan coming to India for the World Cup. Recently ICC officials went to Pakistan for their clarification and it is learned that the delay in the schedule is due to their confirmation as they still have not got a green signal from the government.
PCB chief Najam Sethi the decision isn’t in their hand as the government is the key architect here. He cited how the same situation happened ahead of the 2016 T20 World Cup and that had to take the permission of the government. Speaking to the press, he said:
“As far as India and Pakistan go, neither the PCB or the BCCI can take decisions. The respective governments only can take decisions. You remember what happened in 2016? India did not come before that also, but we went to India. I remember I went to the interior minister at that time. We discussed whether we should go to India or not, boycott the World Cup or not.
“Then we discussed it with then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He said we have to go. Then we formed a team with ISI and IB who went to India, checked the venues in India, we got one venue changed from Dharamsala to Kolkata. Then we went and participated in the T20 World Cup.”

ICC World Cup 2023: “Even if the government gives us permission, we have to look at the venues and decide where to play,” says Najam Sethi
Najam Sethi further went on to say that they have also conveyed to the ICC that if the government gives them clearance they will travel to India. He was quick to quip that even after getting clearance they will have to look at the venues. He said:
“We have told the ICC also that if our government looks into the security considerations and gives us permission, we will come to play in India. If they don’t give, how can we come and play in India?
“Even if the government gives us permission, we have to look at the venues and decide where to play. That comes later. Firstly, the government has to give us the nod. It has to tell us whether we can go or not.”
Coming to the Asia Cup, PCB’s hybrid model has been accepted by the ACC. Out of 13 games, 4 games will take place in Pakistan whereas 9 games will be played in Sri Lanka.
