ICC World Test Championship Final: Day 2 Report – The 2nd day of the World Test Championship Finals was also dominated by Australia as they managed to rack up a massive 469 runs on the board before leaving India down to just 5 wickets with the top 4 batters once again failing to deliver for the team in the time of requirement. At the end of the day’s play, Ajinkya Rahane and KS Bharat stand on the crease for India with the team still trailing by 318 runs.

India’s resilience remains intact as they fought hard to maintain parity in the contest, securing four wickets for 95 runs. However, it is Australia who will be the more satisfied team, having surpassed the 400-run mark and maintaining their position of strength. Nonetheless, India can take solace in the fact that they have not allowed the match to slip away completely into Australian dominance.

The beginning of the day posed a foreboding challenge for India when Mohammed Siraj offered two half-volleys, allowing Steve Smith to effortlessly reach his 31st Test century. However, the Indian bowlers quickly adjusted their length and were duly rewarded. Travis Head fell victim to a well-directed short ball, gloving it to the wicketkeeper, thereby terminating his 285-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Cameron Green’s innings was short-lived, coming to an end with an audacious drive. Shardul Thakur then enticed a false shot from Smith, dismantling his stumps and dismissing him for 121 runs. Axar Patel’s commendable efforts in the field led to Mitchell Starc’s downfall. At the break, Australia’s total stood at an impressive 422 for 7.

Australia continuing from where they left off managed to put up a massive 469 runs on the board at the end of their inning. The 2nd witnessed a pivotal moment as Pat Cummins claimed the wicket of Rohit Sharma, while Scott Boland dismissed Shubman Gill.

The Indian batting lineup finds itself in a pickle, and the Australian team senses an opportunity to exploit the situation. The Australian fast bowlers, displaying top-quality skills, have resorted to a tactic that their Indian counterparts hesitated to employ – consistently bowling at the stumps.

Cummins and Boland have impressively maintained tight lines, with Boland repeatedly targeting a specific patch on the 22-yard strip. The game currently heavily favors Australia, especially after their tailenders showed resilience and allowed Alex Carey to accelerate towards a potential half-century, only for him to fall two runs short of the milestone.

India’s Mohammed Siraj emerged as the standout performer with four wickets to his name. However, the batting department has thus far disappointed, as the Indian openers failed to make a substantial contribution towards closing in on Australia’s total.

Australia continue to pile on the pain on India as the Rohit Sharma-led side are in a horrible position at the moment with the team having lost 5 wickets at the end of days’ play with Ajinkya Rahane and KS Bharat alongside remaining India’s only hope to pull themselves out of a follow-on position.

Both Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara had a dismal stay at the middle as the two were dismissed one after the other after failing to make any impact on the game. Ravindra Jadeja and  Ajinkya Rahane made their best efforts to rescue their team from the position with a 71 runs partnership for the 5th wicket. However, Nathan Lyon put a damper on India’s hopes to dismiss Jadeja on 48.

At the end of the day’s play, India have 151 runs on the board at the loss of 5 wickets and they are trailing by 318 runs in comparison to Australia’s mammoth 469 runs on the board.
