Shreyas Iyer damage control done by BCCI; Shubman Gill pays the price

Shreyas Iyer to replace Rohit Sharma as ODI captain; No place for Shubman Gill confirms BCCI

BCCI is considering Shreyas Iyer as the skipper to replace Rohit Sharma, while Shubman Gill is likely to take over the T20I side from Suryakumar Yadav, hence proposing a two-captain model across three formats.

After the immense buzz created over Shreyas Iyer's snub from the T20I side selected for the upcoming Asia Cup, where selectors have cited that despite good form, there are no vacancies left for players like Shreyas and Yashasvi Jaiswal to make their comeback. Indian management and the BCCI now have new strategies up their sleeves.

Ever since the Test retirement of the two veterans and the white-ball series against Bangladesh being postponed, there has been severe doubt imposed over the careers of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

As of now, reports suggest that the BCCI wants Rohit to reconsider his decision and quit the format for younger players who can prepare them till the next World Cup.

Shreyas Iyer ahead in the race for ODI captaincy

Ever since the talks of Rohit Sharma's retirement from ODIs have surfaced, there have been only two names lining up for the ODI captaincy: Test skipper Shubman Gill and rising superstar Shreyas Iyer.

Though Rohit's stance is yet to be confirmed, BCCI has yet to make any formal decision, and Sharma should also align with their decision; however, Shreyas Iyer has been pushed as the frontrunner for ODI captaincy over Shubman Gill after Rohit's snub.

Dainik Jagran has claimed the above-mentioned fate of Rohit and his swap with Shreyas; however, they have also claimed that a decision would be made after the end of the Asia Cup. If Rohit is ready to hang up his boots, he can be replaced by Shreyas as soon as the Australia tour.

Shubman Gill is in line to succeed Suryakumar Yadav as T20I skipper

After revealing their bigger plans for the middle-order batter post his disappointing snub from the Asia Cup squad, the Central Cricket Board has also shed light on the future of the T20 captain. Suryakumar is now the skipper of the side, but even the Mumbai Indians batter is not a long-term choice considering his age.

Though Surya's efficiency in the format cannot be doubted, the format needs fitter players, and age always stands as a growing concern over fitness. Hence, the Dainik Jagran report suggests that the BCCI is willing to appoint Shubman Gill as the next T20I skipper.

BCCI proposes the 2 Captain model to manage workload

Considering the latest packed schedule of the international teams, Shubman Gill, being the Test skipper, would often be busy in long series and would have to manage his workload to keep himself away from any injury.

With the ODI format being another major schedule that requires way too much commitment from the skipper, the BCCI has considered proposing a two-captain approach. BCCI is not willing to burden one player with all the responsibility.

Shreyas Iyer's appointment in ODIs with Gill as the skipper in the other two formats is an effort to share the workload between the two batters.
