Rohit Sharma's India retirement loading? Shubman Gill all set to take..

Indian veteran and former skipper Rohit Sharma has been surrounded by a cloud of uncertainty over his availability for the upcoming ODI events, and hence, speculations have been made over his supposed retirement from international cricket. Shubman Gill, the India red-ball captain, has been cited as Rohit's successor in the ODI side.

Ever since Shubman Gill led India successfully in the Test series against England, the 25-year-old has been hyped to a huge extent, also being considered as India's all-format captain. As per reports, even Gautam Gambhir supports an all-format one-skipper policy, since that has been India's success mantra in ICC tournaments.

As of now, India has three different players in the role of a captain: Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is, Shubman Gill in Tests, and Rohit Sharma in One-day cricket.

Recent Social Media speculations hint towards Rohit Sharma's retirement

A recent social media post made by News24 Deputy Sports Editor Vaibhav Bhola said some big news will hit the internet on the 20th of August. His cryptic post has raised suspicions about the veteran's supposed retirement or step down from captaincy.

The 37-year-old veteran Indian skipper is India's second most successful captain, with 2 ICC trophies under his belt. India won the iconic 2024 ICC T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy under Rohit's leadership. They also reached the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup after 12 years under his captaincy.

Rohit has also led India in the WTC Final of 2023; however, despite all his possible unavailability in the 2027 ICC World Cup, citing his current fitness and age, the Indian team is likely considering newer options in the captain's role.

Shubman Gill tagged as Rohit Sharma's successor in ODI captaincy

Amid the rising buzz over Rohit Sharma's possible snub as India's ODI captain, the newer skipper would need some time to cope with the team and find his suitable XI before the World Cup. With the World Cup only 2 years from now, the ODI team will be revamped.

Indian 25-year-old emerging leader Shubman Gill replaced Rohit as India's Test skipper and had a commendable series in England. Not only did Gill function as a good skipper, but he also rejoiced in his stay with the bat. He amassed 754 runs, broke a ton of records, and hit several individual milestones.

Hence, with the doubt of additional pressure lifted, Shubman Gill, who is also a regular opener in the ODI side alongside Rohit, has been cited as the next Indian skipper who might replace Sharma. No updates have been officially made, but this has been the buzz.

Shreyas Iyer, another veteran batsman in the Indian ODI side and a consistent performer in the last few years, has also been considered for a captaincy role, but his current treatment in the Indian side doesn't make him a likely choice for the captaincy.

Virat Kohli's fate in the Indian ODI team

With Rohit Sharma's possible retirement, the threat of retirement also looms over the head of Indian legend Virat Kohli. Although the legend's fitness cannot be questioned, his age remains a decisive factor in considering his chances of featuring in the 2027 World Cup.

However, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been India's most consistent batters in the 50-over format and have scored the majority of the runs for India. If Indian management and selectors do not consider otherwise, then the two veterans are supposed to return to the field from the Australian white-ball tour.
