Indian selectors ask Shreyas Iyer to start preparing after heavy backlash

Shreyas Iyer

Team India batter Shreyas Iyer has been excluded from the T20I squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, which has sparked debate. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed the reason behind the decision, and the batter could make a return to the national team through the Test side against the West Indies.

Iyer was not only left out of the 15-member squad but also excluded from the five stand-by players. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the team with Shubman Gill as vice-captain. Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Suryakumar Yadav have been included, along with the lower middle-order batters.

Shreyas Iyer Has Not Played for India in T20Is Since December 2023

Shreyas Iyer has not played for India in T20Is since December 2023 against Australia in Bengaluru. The 30-year-old has played 51 T20Is, scoring 1,104 runs at an average of 30.66 with a strike rate of 136.12, including eight half-centuries.

Iyer scored 53 runs off 37 balls in his last T20I match at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Men in Blue secured a 4-1 series win over Australia during the home bilateral series following the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Iyer was instrumental in India’s Champions Trophy victory in the UAE earlier this year. The ace batter led Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the IPL 2025 final. He scored 604 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of 175.07, including six fifties. The batter also guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL 2024 title.

Shreyas Iyer Looks to Overcome Asia Cup Heartbreak with Test Comeback

Shreyas Iyer could return to the national Test team. According to RevSportz, the 30-year-old, who hasn’t played red-ball cricket for India since February 2024, may feature in the home series against the West Indies in October. He has to prove himself in the upcoming Duleep Trophy.

"Sources in the know said Shreyas wasn’t even considered but he hasn’t been made the persona non grata. There’s a good chance of the Mumbai batsman returning to the Test fold in the home series against the West Indies in October. Shreyas has the Duleep Trophy to make a statement," the report read.

He last played a Test for India during the home series against England in 2024. The batter has played 14 Tests, scoring 811 runs at an average of 36.86, including one century and five half-centuries.

Shreyas Iyer Eyes a Comeback in India’s Test Squad Against West Indies

Shreyas Iyer could make a return to India’s Test squad later this year, with the number three and six positions still undecided. Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair, who played those spots in England, failed to secure them.

Iyer can perform against spin bowlers, which makes him a strong candidate. He scored 480 runs in the recent Ranji Trophy at an average of 68.57 for Mumbai. The batter is set to play for West Zone in the Duleep Trophy, which could provide a crucial opportunity to impress selectors.

Teammates like Sarfaraz Khan are also competing for middle-order spots. Performances in the upcoming domestic tournaments could determine whether Iyer earns a Test recall in October when India hosts the West Indies.
